Chiropractics: An Option to Consider for Back Pain Relief

By: Art Gib

While some procedures associated with chiropractic care can be traced back to ancient times, chiropractics as known today, was founded by a self-taught healer, Daniel David Palmer in 1895. He believed that the body has a natural healing ability. Misalignments of the spine can interfere with the flow of energy needed to support health, Palmer theorized, and the key to health is to normalize the function of the nervous system, especially the spinal cord. This is still the belief today and is the basis for chiropractics.

The American Chiropractic Association, is based in Arlington, VA. The ACA is the largest professional association in the world representing chiropractors. This organization provides lobbying, public relations, professional, and educational opportunities, research funding, and leadership for the chiropractic profession. The ACA is to Chiropractors, what the AMA is to medical doctors.

Chiropractics focus on the relationship between the body's structure, mostly the spine and its functions. The practice of chiropractics primarily performs adjustments to the spine or other parts of the body, with the goal of correcting alignment problems thought to inhibit the body's natural ability to heal itself. Chiropractic practitioners in the United States are required to earn a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from properly accredited colleges, and to have a license in the state in which they practice.

People seek chiropractic care primarily for painful conditions such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches. The side effects and risks in receiving chiropractic treatment depend on the type and technique used. There are hundreds of ways or techniques to adjust the spine.

Each chiropractor becomes highly skilled in a variety of adjustment procedures that are most suitable for your age, body type and condition. In general, an adjustment consists of a sudden, short, controlled thrust against a joint. The chiropractor will move the affected joint to the limit of its range of movement and then make a rapid thrust beyond this point to stretch the joint capsule and surrounding tissues.

The chiropractic industry has had it's share of criticism thorough out the years and is considered alternative medicine by some, but most chiropractors consider their profession as an addition to traditional health care. Chiropractics, is not meant to replace, but to compliment other treatments in medicine. This theory is much more widely accepted today than it was a few years ago. Insurance companies have recognized chiropractics as a covered service and have helped to give credibility to the practice.

In today's health care arena, there are many types of alternative treatments that were once, considered as quackery. Chiropractics is one of them that has now proven its worth and adds more choices to alternatives for treatment.
